First settled in 1770, Alton is located on the southern most tip of Lake Winnipesaukee. Originally settled by farmers who prized the highland areas that provided less frost, Alton became known around the world as the home of the Rockwood Clough Company, the world’s largest producer of corkscrews in the early 1900’s. With wonderful hiking to be found the Mt. Major state park and an abundant shoreline, tourism has become the main business. Whether you are a winter or summer outdoor enthusiast, the location on the lake and proximity to the mountains make Alton a great place to live during the summer months or throughout the year.
